This Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management will enable you to practice functional and theoretical key managerial skills that are dynamic, forward thinking and practical, allowing you to become strategically involved in today’s rapidly expanding health and social care sector. Students will study three modules over the duration of one year, studying one module per trimester. This Postgraduate Certificate programme is available to study part-time and is delivered fully online. You’ll study three modules which address the core aspects of Leadership and Management:

Our academic team recognise that health and social care professionals are required to have a continually developing wide range of specific and transferable skills through additional training and Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This course is particularly beneficial for directors of nursing, clinical directors, doctors, senior nurses, senior health and social care professionals, heads of service and general health and social care workers who are seeking to gain further progression within their role. This module provides an introduction to Advanced Integrative Practice, and covers such areas as Decision Making and Problem solving, Autonomous Practice and Critical Thinking.

For this programme Advanced Practice means: “Autonomous working using high level decision-making and effective problem-solving skills, influenced by specialist knowledge in order to improve practice”. Within this core module it is our intention to encapsulate the essence of Masters level education by incorporating the information literacy skills required at Masters level and applying them to health & social care academic practice.

Increasingly, practitioners are being called upon to lead change towards Integrative person centred care within their organisation on both clinical and strategic fronts. You will be directed to apply the key constructs of Advanced Practice to Integrative Health and Social Care contexts.

The module will be delivered by drawing upon traditional teaching and learning strategies in terms of lectures, guest lectures and seminars.  These strategies are coupled with more innovative approaches including critical video reviews, seminars and self-directed study.

This module is designed for health and social care professionals who are in a leadership role. It will provide the key constructs to evaluate and mobilise your workforce. Whilst developing a greater understanding of your own leadership styles and the understanding of your role, you will have the opportunity to empower, modernise and improve the current workforce to organisational success. The module provides a current in-depth knowledge and information surrounding theories and practices of leadership and communication challenges in today’s organisations.

You will learn how to critically appraise your own leadership skills against a defined set of leadership theories and styles.You’ll reflect on a specific leadership issue, detailing the processes and procedures personally undertaken, solutions offered and outcomes achieved.

– Management for an Integrative Health and Social Care Workforce

This module acknowledges the needs of those in current or developmental managerial roles in health and social care arenas or organisations (including the voluntary or independent sector) who wish to develop new management skills to enhance future Integrative Health and Social Care. You will most likely  already be employed in practice and/or in management roles within the fields of health, social care, public, voluntary/community sector organisations. Through this module you will gain the skills to lead quality and service improvements, understand the value of effective strategic management and develop skills in professional judgement and problem solving.

The module will teach you to critically examine management issues in health and social care practice, demonstrate personal management skills using analysis, planning, implementation and current management techniques.

Other topics will include Power Politics and Conflict, Innovative Problem Solving, Professional Judgement, Financial skills for decision making and Social Networking for influence.

You will normally need the following:

– have 2 years post Graduate experience in an appropriate subject or equivalent academic credits

– to be currently in employment in an arena which will enable the achievement of the individual module learning outcomes e.g. voluntary, public, private, community, acute health and social care arenas.

– If you have an International qualification, it will need to be mapped to the UK equivalent registration to ensure that you are entering the programme with at least 120 academic credits at level 6.

English language qualifications

If English is not your first language you will need an English language qualification. For this course you will need at least one of the following:

– IELTS 7.0

– TOEFL: 600 (paper based), 250 (computer based) or 100 (internet based)

– Pearson Test of Academic English: 51

– Cambridge Advanced Certificate: Pass

– London Tests of English: we accept level 4 for undergraduate courses

– International GCE O Level English Language: Grade C

– International GCSE English/English as a Second Language: Grade C

Non-standard entrants:

If you are a non-standard entrant you may be required to submit evidence of your work experience and counselled before being offered a place to ensure that you have the necessary capacity for critical awareness and reflection.
Applicants who wish to apply for Advanced Standing and /or block credit will be assessed according to the University’s recognition of Prior Learning (APL) Regulatory Framework. The flexible approach to APL ensures students may enter at PG Cert or Diploma levels.

Once enrolled onto your course, you will be assigned a dedicated Online Learner Advisor with extensive knowledge of your programme, who will be your main point of contact throughout your course.
To help you succeed in reaching your academic goals, your Online Learner Advisor will maintain regular communication with you, offering advice and guidance for any non-academic issues such as pace of study, fees and funding, authorised breaks from study, dealing with exceptional circumstances, and much more.

Student Wellbeing

As an Alumnus of the University, you will have access to the Careers and Employment Centre for up to 3 years after graduation. You can access the service online, over Skype/ Hangout, on the phone, through e-mail or in person at our Derby campus.

Provide as much detail as you can and we will send you an email acknowledging receipt of your application.

– Written reference supplied on headed paper from either a manager, supervisor, tutor or teacher

– Copies of certificates or letter of testimony for previous qualifications

Don’t worry if you can’t attach your documents right away.  Simply write your name and unique application id onto them, email, fax or post them to us after you’ve submitted your completed application.

Our Online Learning Advisors will review your application and contact you within 1 working week. If your application is successful, we will make you an ‘unconditional’ offer. If we still need some additional information from you (eg evidence of your qualifications and experience including certificates and references) we may make you a conditional offer. If your application is unsuccessful on this occasion, we will email you to let you know.
