This course will help you to expand and advance your understanding of dementia care, while teaching you how to apply these skills to your own health and social care setting. This course will also enable you to assess and support the impact your actions will have on the future of integrative practice, developing an advanced professional approach to integrative care for people living with dementia.

You will study three modules over the duration of one year, studying one module per trimester. In studying this Postgraduate Certificate, you will gain an advanced understanding of the multidisciplinary perspectives in dementia care, developing a framework to form effective high quality care that is in line with local, national and international policies.

You will gain a qualification in dementia care that allows you to offer employers a specific and unique skillset for use within a practice setting as well as the ability to imbed your skills and knowledge to help meet the needs of those living with dementia.

Aimed at professionals working in and around dementia care

This Postgraduate Certificate is available to study part-time and is delivered fully online. You will study three modules whilst addressing the core aspects of Dementia Care:

-Advanced Integrative Practice

-Social Consequences of Dementia Care

-Partnerships in Dementia Care

The Postgraduate Certificate in Partnerships in Dementia Care is the result of very thorough and informative discussions with key stakeholders both regionally and nationally. It aims to deliver the flexibility, skills and knowledge professionals seek to progress throughout their career and to make a difference in the workplace. This course ensures professional standards are met and also counts towards your CPD for the year, enabling progressive structured improvement in your role.

This course is particularly beneficial for primary care, mental health nurses and community nurses, general practitioners, public health care workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, care home managers, social workers and those working in the emergency services (including the police and fire services). The knowledge and skills gained from studying this programme will enhance your ability to develop your career and enrich your professional practice.

This module provides an introduction to Advanced Integrative Practice, and covers such areas as Decision Making and Problem solving, Autonomous Practice and Critical Thinking.

For this programme Advanced Practice means: “Autonomous working using high level decision-making and effective problem-solving skills, influenced by specialist knowledge in order to improve practice”. Within this core module it is our intention to encapsulate the essence of Masters level education by incorporating the information literacy skills required at Masters level and applying them to health & social care academic practice.

Increasingly, practitioners are being called upon to lead change towards Integrative person centred care within their organisation on both clinical and strategic fronts. You will be directed to apply the key constructs of Advanced Practice to Integrative Health and Social Care contexts.

The module will be delivered by drawing upon traditional teaching and learning strategies in terms of lectures, guest lectures and seminars.  These strategies are coupled with more innovative approaches including critical video reviews, seminars and self-directed study.

The module introduces the professional, ethical and legal dilemmas within the context of quality of life, age and culture surrounding Dementia. Through collaborative exploration of leadership structures, models of practice, management, efficiency, effectiveness and consistent quality and performance you will propose interventions to enhance Dementia Care within clinical practice. The theme ‘person centred care’ will underpin the module and you will explore cognitive and behavioural methods of intervention for the client.

After completing this module, you will have learnt how to create a framework for effective, collaborative high quality interventions based on person-centred care, as well as demonstrate an advanced understanding of multidisciplinary perspectives of Dementia and approaches to care.

Topics covered will include the professional, ethical and legal dilemmas associated with the care of individuals living with Dementias in relation to context, quality of life, age and culture. Furthermore, you will learn about models of practice management, underpinning practice and use of evidence in Dementia care and the impact and involvement of care givers and their families.

Recognition of the trajectory of the disease and the challenges associated with assisting people to maintain as much independence as possible, through the stages of dementia, is a key focus of a modern health and social care system. The module aims to develop skills required of an advanced practitioner capable of autonomous working within their practice setting.

You will build on you understanding of Dementia as an ‘impairment’, differentiate between approaches and models of care, understand the barrier to the maintenance of personhood and apply evidence to practice appropriate to your health or social care context.

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the context of local and national health and social initiatives in dementia care and explore the implications for practitioners. You will also critically evaluate barriers to maintaining personhood; and critically reflect on their own role in developing a service improvement project/initiative.

You will normally need the following:

-have 2 years post Graduate experience in an appropriate subject or equivalent academic credits

-to be currently in employment in an arena which will enable the achievement of the individual module learning outcomes e.g. voluntary, public, private, community, acute health and social care arenas.

-If you have an International qualification, it will need to be mapped to the UK equivalent registration to ensure that you are entering the programme with at least 120 academic credits at level 6.

English language qualifications

If English is not your first language you will need an English language qualification. For this course you will need at least one of the following:

-IELTS 7.0

-TOEFL: 600 (paper based), 250 (computer based) or 100 (internet based)

-Pearson Test of Academic English: 51

-Cambridge Advanced Certificate: Pass

-London Tests of English: we accept level 4 for undergraduate courses

-International GCE O Level English Language: Grade C

-International GCSE English/English as a Second Language: Grade C

Non-standard entrants:

If you are a non-standard entrant you may be required to submit evidence of your work experience and counselled before being offered a place to ensure that you have the necessary capacity for critical awareness and reflection.

Applicants who wish to apply for Advanced Standing and /or block credit will be assessed according to the University’s recognition of Prior Learning (APL) Regulatory Framework. The flexible approach to APL ensures students may enter at PG Cert or Diploma levels.
