The MA Education (ESOL) Pathway is designed to meet the interests of both novice and experienced teachers of:

– English as a Second Language (ESL)

– English as a Foreign Language (EFL)

– those teaching international students and immigrant groups within Community, FE and HE (ESOL/ EAP/EGAP)

– those involved in teaching non-native speakers of English within the private and state school sectors and work based contexts ( EFL/EAL/ESOL/ESP).

It provides students with a strong theoretical and practical foundation, touching on such areas as applied linguistics, language acquisition, ESL/EFL classroom methods, testing, cross-cultural considerations and English as a Global Language.

Our modules will encourage you to consider ways of understanding language learning processes, and expand your awareness of the approaches and principles, models and pedagogies, alongside policies that support or influence successful English Language Teaching (ELT) across a range of local, national and international contexts.

To complete the MA Education (English for Speakers of Other Languages) you will need to complete a total of 180 credits (the equivalent of nine 20 credit modules), which must include:

– Evidence Based Practice

– Independent Study (60 credit module)

– The Principles of English Language Teaching

– Language Learning: Theory and Practice

You can then choose from two of the other optional 20 credit modules below.

You will also evaluate a range of contemporary leadership theories and study how leadership can be utilised.

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to critically analyse contemporary theories on leadership in an applied context; critically reflect and utilise the concepts of diversity, equality and quality procedures.

You will usually need to have either:

– a good undergraduate degree (2:2 or above) or an equivalent level 6 qualification (Equivalent overseas qualifications which will be verified by NARIC)

– be currently working within the education arena.

OR

– Level 5 teaching qualification plus evidence of five years’ teaching experience within an institution may be considered

– be currently working within the education arena.

You will be asked to provide a CV/Resume detailing your academic and work experience. The Admissions Tutor reserves the right to interview an individual to ascertain the relevance of their work and life experiences as an acceptable entry for the programme.

In addition, we recognize the following qualifications:

Full DELTA (Cambridge Diploma in TESOL) Modules 1,2 and 3 are normally eligible for 60 credits at Level 7 against our MA Education.

English language qualifications

You will normally need one of the following English Language qualifications:

– GCE O level English Language: Grade C

– GCSE English: Grade C

If English is not your first language you will need an English language qualification. For this course you will need at least one of the following:

– IELTS 6.0

– TOEFL 550 (paper based) 213 (computer based) or 80 (internet based)

– Pearson Test of Academic English: 51

– Cambridge Advanced Certificate: Pass

– London Tests of English: we accept level 5 for postgraduate courses

– International GCE O Level English Language: Grade C

– International GCSE English/English as a Second Language: Grade C.

– Other English Language qualifications may be accepted and you should provide full details of these with your application.
