Our online Postgraduate Certificate International Hospitality Management is the first stage of our popular Masters programme, the only online higher education Masters programme accredited by the Institute of Hospitality.

It has been designed to meet the needs of the dynamic international hospitality industry, equipping you with practical and relevant skills, which combined with your existing experience, can help you to advance your career within the industry.

Institute of Hospitality Educational Membership Scheme (EMS)

Through our partnership with the Institute of Hospitality you’ll be given free access to the Institute’s Educational Membership Scheme (EMS) once you’ve enrolled onto this course. This gives you access to management guides, monthly specialist newsletters, e-journals, webinars and much more.

With a choice of dates to start your course (September, January or May) and interactive online learning materials, you’ve got the flexibility to study whenever and wherever is most convenient for you. The course modules still operate within a fixed trimester but you can choose to study during the day, evenings or at the weekend instead of having to attend fixed lectures.

Theory and skills for direct application

You’ll gain relevant, practical, and business-focused knowledge, which combined with an understanding of operational, tactical and strategic issues, and the necessary management tools, will allow you to apply theories directly to your workplace situation. The programme is particularly suited to those already working within the industry, holding a related or unrelated undergraduate degree, and looking for a practical route to deepen their knowledge of the hospitality industry and build upon existing qualifications.

Without the initial time commitment of a full Masters, the Postgraduate Certificate is completed within 12 months, allowing you to continue your study to the MSc International Hospitality Management level at a later date if you wish.

As all of your resources are online, you have the flexibility to fit your study periods around your existing work commitments and shift patterns. Course modules still operate within a fixed trimester but you can choose to study during the day, in the evenings or at the weekend rather than having to attend fixed lectures. Through webinars and online discussion forums, you will connect with your online tutor and fellow students from around the world to discuss and debate key topics and share experiences within this dynamic industry.

You’ll develop skills and awareness of the various management functions, as part of the total business structures in a variety of organisations. This will include an understanding of globalisation and the impacts of a multicultural workforce that can present organisational and operational challenges, as the concepts of service quality and customer satisfaction change rapidly in the market place.

The international hospitality industry is a customer focused, people orientated business. Managers want to satisfy the customer demands in the form of improved quality service that ensures customer orientation, yet they are under increasing pressure to ensure operation efficiency.

This module is designed to enhance your knowledge and understanding of service quality, customer satisfaction and the measurement of these within the hospitality industry. You will explore the predicaments put on businesses between pressure to increase operational efficiency and improve quality service.

On completion of this module, you will be able to apply the concepts of the service quality and customer satisfaction in the hospitality industry; and critically review the methodologies for assessing service quality and customer satisfaction.

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of a portfolio of techniques and their selection to use in appropriate situations. This includes an appreciation of the development of alternative theoretical perspectives behind management thinking in this field.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to evaluate the functional role of operations in an organisation and its strategic importance, provide a critical analysis of an operational plan for a hospitality organisation.

Strategic choices are the accumulation of functional management developments, and the machinations of the external environment, combined with an ability to be able to predict, and be reflective to, rapid changes in consumption trends. This module seeks to challenge the notions of strategic thinking within the global market place. You will study the challenges posed to industries by globalisation, and changes in the production and consumption of services. These changing concepts also bring into question the tensions between the academic fixation with historic step stage modelling, including the adaptation of the classically rigid business paradigms, and post-modern hedonistic consumers.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to provide a critical evaluation of current business strategic thinking within the service sector; apply current strategic thinking to a given business problem.

Online Learner Advisors
Once enrolled onto your course, you will be assigned a dedicated Online Learner Advisor with extensive knowledge of your programme, who will be your main point of contact throughout your course.
To help you succeed in reaching your academic goals, your Online Learner Advisor will maintain regular communication with you, offering advice and guidance for any non-academic issues such as pace of study, fees and funding, authorised breaks from study, dealing with exceptional circumstances, and much more.

Student Wellbeing
Achieving success in your studies is affected as much by your wellbeing as it is by your academic ability. If you are happy and confident within yourself and your environment, then you will be far more able to achieve the success that you deserve.
The Student Wellbeing services offer support for anything that may impact on you, your academic performance or your experience as a student, from budgeting and anxiety to managing serious problems. The counsellors are especially trained in supporting students online, no matter the issue.

eLibrary and Resource Centre
The University’s library is accessible to online and distance learners. Investment has been made to make sure that your reading lists are in electronic format and that there is a wide range of online databases, digital texts and ejournals available to you.
As a UK based University of Derby student, you can also access other libraries via the SCONUL Access Scheme, which enables materials to be borrowed from higher-education libraries across the country. Many universities, HE colleges and national libraries throughout the UK and Ireland participate in the scheme making their resources widely available.

As an Alumnus of the University, you will have access to the Careers and Employment Centre for up to 3 years after graduation. You can access the service online, over Skype/ Hangout, on the phone, through e-mail or in person at our Derby campus.

It’s free to apply and you have 28 days to complete your application so don’t worry if you don’t have everything to hand right now.

– Step 2 – Submit your online application.

Provide as much detail as you can and we will send you an email acknowledging receipt of your application.

Please, attach the following documents to your online application:

– Photo ID – this could be your passport or driving licence

– Written reference supplied on headed paper from either a manager, supervisor, tutor or teacher

– Copies of certificates or letter of testimony for previous qualifications

Don’t worry if you can’t attach your documents right away.  Simply write your name and unique application id onto them, email, fax or post them to us after you’ve submitted your completed application.

– Step 3 – Wait for a response.

Our Online Learning Advisors will review your application and contact you within 1 working week. If your application is successful, we will make you an ‘unconditional’ offer. If we still need some additional information from you (eg evidence of your qualifications and experience including certificates and references) we may make you a conditional offer. If your application is unsuccessful on this occasion, we will email you to let you know.

We’ll ask you to enrol onto your course about 4 – 6 weeks before the start of term.  For example, if you apply to start your course in September enrolment will open approximately mid-August.
