The online BSc (Hon) Management Accounting degree Top-Up course will equip you with the relevant skills to pursue management accounting positions within a sector of your choice. This course allows you to top up existing qualifications to a full Management Accounting undergraduate degree. It explores the complex and challenging nature of the management accounting and business environment.

This Management Accounting BSc Top-Up degree is ideally suited to holders of CIMA’s Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting and those interested in obtaining a degree in Management Accounting who have professional accounting qualifications or external business, finance or accountancy qualifications (up to level 5).

 

Modules:

– Financial Strategy

A financial strategy forms a key part of an organisation’s overarching strategic plan which details acceptable sources of raising funds and states where these funds should be spent or invested to maximise the wealth of its shareholders and satisfy other stakeholders

In this module you will develop the competencies and skills needed to formulate and implement a financial strategy which can support the overall business strategy of an entity. You will evaluate the merits of potential investment opportunities for which you will be required to valuate corporate entities for mergers, acquisitions and divestments.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to investigate the financial requirements of an organisation and propose an appropriate financial strategy, analyse the corporate finance policy of an organisation; appraise an organisations dividend decision.

– Independent Study

This module has been designed to allow you the opportunity to extend your knowledge on the theories, principles and concepts addressed within the field of management accounting and to apply them within private, public or community sector organisations by means of an Independent Study dissertation.

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to prepare a research proposal that tackles a challenging problem within management accounting, select an appropriate methodology to undertake the project, conduct an independent enquiry that successfully meets the aims of the project; critically evaluate the findings and impact of the project.

– Research Methods

This module will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to research methods which will assist you in undertaking a research project within management accountancy. In this module you will study skills needed to formulate a research problem, decide on appropriateness of different data collection methods and acquire the skills to present your information. You will also be provided with information on data collection and analysis, including various primary and secondary data collection techniques and qualitative and quantitative analysis methods.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to propose a research question based on a contemporary issue within the discipline of management accounting; critically evaluate a range of research method techniques which can be used to study the research question.

Risk Management

All modern day organisations are legally, financially and morally required to manage their risk bearing activities in the interest of their stakeholders. Risk Management is a process whereby an organisations manager identifies the risk it faces, evaluates the likely effect of these risks, introduces a range of control measures and finally monitors and evaluates the success of these measures.

This module draws heavily on advanced management accounting tools and techniques and aims to provide you with the opportunity to apply these techniques by evaluating risk management strategies in real life contemporary organisations.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of how risks can be identified and categorised based on the impact they have on different organisations; and demonstrate awareness of the impact of various responses to strategic risks. You will also be able to demonstrate a critical awareness of the internal control systems and management accounting strategies that an organisation can use to manage risks and examine ways in which risks associated with cash flows and capital investment decisions can be managed.

– Strategic Management

Strategic management is a process of continuous planning, monitoring and analysing an organisation’s strategy to ensure it meets all its aims and objectives. This module will help you to formulate critical awareness of how organisations implement their strategies by aligning people, projects, processes, structures and relationships. You will also examine key skills needed to manage change within an organisation.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to analyse the influence of the external environment on an organisation, critically appraise the strategic position of an organisation and evaluate its strategic options; propose methods to implement organisational change after analysing the effect of various change management strategies on an organisation. You will also be able to appraise the suitability of using various tools in implementing strategy and analyse the role played by Information Systems to facilitate this.

For direct entry onto the course you will need one of the following:

– CIMA Advanced Diploma (E2/P2/F2) in Management Accounting

– ACCA – Any 6 papers from F1-F9

– HND or Foundation Degree in business, accountancy or finance or equivalent overseas qualification

– Edexcel BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Business with accountancy or finance

– ICAEW Professional Stage qualifications

– CIPFA Professional Diploma.

If you do not meet the entry criteria above but have one of the qualifications listed below, you may be eligible to join the course after passing a level 5 Macroeconomics for Business module:

– CIMA Operational level plus at least 3 years of relevant full time work experience within the financial sector

– ACCA F1-F3 plus at least 3 years of relevant full time work experience within the financial sector

– HNC in business, finance or accountancy plus 3 years relevant full time work experience within the financial sector.

– Additional Exemptions

If English is not your first language you will need an English language qualification. For this course you will need at least one of the following:

– IELTS 6.0

– TOEFL 550 (paper based) 213 (computer based) or 80 (internet based)

– Pearson Test of Academic English: 51

– Cambridge Advanced Certificate: Pass

– London Tests of English: we accept level 4 for undergraduate courses

– International GCE O Level English Language: Grade C

– International GCSE English/English as a Second Language: Grade C

The University’s library is accessible to online and distance learners. Investment has been made to make sure that your reading lists are in electronic format and that there is a wide range of online databases, digital texts and ejournals available to you.
As a UK based University of Derby student, you can also access other libraries via the SCONUL Access Scheme, which enables materials to be borrowed from higher-education libraries across the country. Many universities, HE colleges and national libraries throughout the UK and Ireland participate in the scheme making their resources widely available.

Provide as much detail as you can and we will send you an email acknowledging receipt of your application.

– Written reference supplied on headed paper from either a manager, supervisor, tutor or teacher

– Copies of certificates or letter of testimony for previous qualifications

Don’t worry if you can’t attach your documents right away.  Simply write your name and unique application id onto them, email, fax or post them to us after you’ve submitted your completed application.

Our Online Learning Advisors will review your application and contact you within 1 working week. If your application is successful, we will make you an ‘unconditional’ offer. If we still need some additional information from you (eg evidence of your qualifications and experience including certificates and references) we may make you a conditional offer. If your application is unsuccessful on this occasion, we will email you to let you know.

We’ll ask you to enrol onto your course about 4 – 6 weeks before the start of term.  For example, if you apply to start your course in September enrolment will open approximately mid-August.
